Public transportation in Vienna is renowned for its efficiency and convenience. Operated by Wiener Linien, the network includes buses, trams, subways, and S-Bahn lines. Tickets and passes from Wiener Linien allow unlimited travel on all forms of rapid transit systems, buses, and trams within Vienna. It’s advisable to opt for time-based tickets, as they offer significant savings and hassle-free travel within the city.

It’s crucial to ensure you have a valid ticket before boarding. Certain tickets require validation upon entry, especially for U-Bahn and S-Bahn stations, while validators are located inside buses and trams. Wiener Linien tickets are not valid on airport shuttle buses, the CAT (City Airport Train), the Westbahn (a private railway service from Westbahnhof), sightseeing buses, or the yellow Ring Tram. Children under six travel free on public transportation, and those under 15 are eligible for reduced fares. Additionally, on Sundays, public holidays, and during school vacations, all children under 15 travel for free. Non-resident students attending school in Austria also qualify for free travel until their 24th birthday. Wiener Linien tickets and passes can be purchased at city stations, ticket machines (often found at U- and S-Bahn entrances), online via the Wiener Linien website and app, and possibly at tobacco shops (Trafiken).

While single tickets can be purchased onboard trams using ticket vending machines, it’s advisable to have the correct change ready. Wiener Linien is gradually introducing multilingual instructions and the option to pay by card. Remember to validate your ticket using the yellow or orange validators located onboard trams and buses or at U- and S-Bahn entrances. For tourists, the Vienna City Card offers both transportation access and discounts on various attractions. he most commonly used tickets are:

  • Single Ticket: Valid for one journey starting from the point of validation, regardless of the number of transfers. There’s no time limit, but the journey must be completed using the fastest route, without extended interruptions.

  • 1-Day WIEN Ticket: This pass is valid for one day until 1 a.m. the following day and available for online purchase.
  • 7-Day WIEN or Weekly Ticket: Valid for seven consecutive days, with the option to choose the start date for online purchases, or valid from Monday until 9 a.m. the following Monday for offline purchases.
