Getting to Vienna

Airport & arrival

Vienna is primarily served by the Vienna International Airport.

VIA is located 25 km south of Vienna. It takes approximately 20-35 minutes to the city centre by car or train. Distances from the neighbouring airports to Vienna by road:

  • Bratislava Airport, Slovakia: 61.5 km
  • Graz, Austria: 193 km

  • Budapest, Hungary: 273 km
  • Klagenfurt Airport, Austria: 318 km

All airports are connected to Vienna by motorway, which allows swift transfers. There are several possibilities to reach the city from the airport, these include train, taxi services, buses or shuttle buses, which are commonly waiting at the airport.

Public bus service – Vienna airport

Vienna Airport Lines (Postbus) connect Vienna International Airport with major transportation hubs. The Vienna Airport Lines are linked to all of Vienna's subway lines. Half-hourly connections to Vienna Airport are offered from Vienna Westbahnhof and Vienna Hauptbahnhof. You can reach the center of Vienna (Morzinplatz/Schwedenplatz) daily around the clock in just 20 minutes. For more information check out the timetable of the bus connections.

City Airport train/CAT – Vienna airport

In just 16 minutes, the CAT takes its passengers non-stop from Vienna Airport to the Wien Mitte transportation hub. The City Airport Train runs daily between 05:37 and 23:38. The City Air Terminal is located just a 10-minute walk from St. Stephen's Cathedral in the Wien Mitte transportation hub and is easily accessible by streetcar, subway, bus and cab. You can also take the regional trains to the city centre of Vienna. Use the Wiener Linien website to find a train to your destination in the Vienna city centre.  

By car

The driving routes in Austria are modern and straightforward. However, there are a few important things to bear in mind if you are travelling to Vienna by car:

  • There must be a first aid kit, a warning triangle and safety jackets in the car.

  • Toll sticker: All cars travelling on Austrian roads are subject to tolls. A toll sticker is required for this. You can find more information about this here

By train

Modern and comfortable trains serve the capital as well as almost every important tourist destination in Austria. Connections to neighboring countries are very good, as direct train services connect Vienna / Austria with Italy, Germany, Hungary, the  Czech Republic, etc. Railway travel is convenient and inexpensive.
